VISIT TO TERIGRAM

The Energy and Resource Institute or TERI was formerly called as Tata Energy Research Institute. It was established in 1974. It is a research based centre located in Gual Pahari, Haryana.

As we entered , we were given a brief introduction about the green building by a faculty member. Then a short movie about the achievements and history of Teri was shown to us. We were told that there was no electricity consumption in the entire building and the appliances were being run on solar energy.

After this we went to explore the campus. We were shown the following things:-

  1. Biomas Gasifier based power generation site– Food and other organic waste are used to produce biogas which is then used for cookImage result for biomass gasifiering food and another energy requirements.

 

 

 

 

 

2. Cooling Tunnel-Air is drawn in an underground tunnel cooling it to comfortable temperatures. This air is then thrown into the rooms while the hot air from the rooms escape through solar chimney due to stack effect. Air conditioners are not used at all. This process is sufficient to keep the rooms cool.

3. Water cleaning facility– Water from the building is cleaned by special type of plants . This water is fit for consumption and reused . It is also used for horticulture purposes.

4. Tissue Culture- We were shown the lab where new plants being prepared by the method of tissue culture. The existing species of banana , strawberry, etc. were being genetically improved. These were then planted in technology parks where they grew further before being planted in the fields.
